Best course & community platforms
Five products that let you charge for access to content, people, or both. The right answer depends almost entirely on whether the community or the curriculum is the product.
How I picked
I score every product against six weighted criteria and only recommend tools I have used on real work. I do not accept payment for placement in this list, and the order is not influenced by commission rates. Full method →

1. Skool: Best when the community is the product
Skool wins on restraint. There is one price, one interface, and members work out how to use it without a tutorial. You give up design control and advanced course features in exchange. That trade is worth it only when the community is the product.
Pros
- Flat $99 regardless of member count, with no tier cliffs as you grow
- Community, courses, calendar and payments in one place
- Members need no onboarding; the interface is deliberately plain
Cons
- Almost no control over member-area design
- Course tooling is shallow, with no quizzes worth the name
- $99 is steep for a community under ~30 paying members
Pricing: $99 a month, flat. 14-day trial.
2. Teachable: Best for structured course businesses
Teachable is what you pick when the course itself is the product and you need it to behave properly: completion tracking, certificates, compliance, tax handling. It is not exciting and it is not cheap, and neither of those is the point.
Pros
- Mature course features: quizzes, certificates, drip, compliance
- Handles sales tax and VAT remittance for you
- Stable, and it rarely surprises you
Cons
- Transaction fees on lower tiers eat margin
- Community features are an afterthought
- Page design tools feel a generation behind
Pricing: $39 to $199 a month. Free plan available.

3. Kajabi: Best all-in-one if you use all of it
Kajabi replaces five subscriptions with one. If you genuinely use the email, funnel, site and course tooling together, the maths works. If you use two of them, you are paying for three you don't touch.
Pros
- Courses, email, funnels, site and payments genuinely integrated
- No transaction fees on any tier
- Analytics tie revenue back to the funnel step
Cons
- $179 entry is the highest in this comparison
- Steep learning curve, so expect a week before you are productive
- You are locked in once email lives here too
Pricing: $179 to $499 a month. 14-day trial.
4. Whop: Best for distribution without a monthly fee
Whop is the only product here that brings you buyers rather than only hosting the ones you already have. The marketplace is the reason to choose it. The trade is that you are a tenant in someone else's storefront.
Pros
- No monthly fee, you pay when you sell
- Built-in marketplace produces discovery you do not have to buy
- Handles licensing, access control and refunds
Cons
- 3% on every transaction outweighs a flat fee at scale
- Your storefront sits inside their brand
- Marketplace quality varies and reflects on you
Pricing: $0 plus 3% per transaction. Free to start.
5. Heartbeat: Best for chat-first communities
Heartbeat is the answer to 'my community lives in Discord but I need to sell something'. Real-time chat is the centre of gravity, with events and courses arranged around it. Weaker than Teachable on curriculum, better than any of them on live feel.
Pros
- Real-time chat that people actually use, unlike forum-style feeds
- Events, threads and courses in the same space
- Free tier is enough to validate demand
Cons
- Course features are basic
- Smaller ecosystem, so fewer integrations
- Mobile app lags the web experience
Pricing: $49 to $149 a month. Free tier.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make money?
I earn a commission when a reader buys through some of the links on this site. It costs you nothing extra. Commission rates differ between products, so I publish my scoring weights and keep the commercial side out of the review process. See my editorial independence policy.
Do vendors pay you to be reviewed or ranked higher?
No. I do not accept payment for a review, for a score, or for a position in a ranking. If a vendor gives me a free account for testing I say so in the review.
How current are these reviews?
Every page shows the date it was last substantively updated. I do not change that date for cosmetic edits. Google treats manipulated freshness dates as a spam signal, and so do I.
What if you get something wrong?
Email me and I will correct it. Corrections are noted at the bottom of the page with the date.
